Automation is one tool you can use to do the tasks that do not provide you or your clients with the value they expect. Automating your firm is easier than you think, and many of the efficiencies you want to achieve may be created by tools you already own.
This interactive lecture-style program is designed to equip you and your legal staff with the skills that will allow you to keep your firm operating, fulfill your ethical obligations, and provide your clients with the services they deserve. Attendees will be introduced to different sources of software and automations that help lawyers achieve better representation and a better work-life balance.
The program will cover ABA Model Rules 1.1 Competence; 1.4 Communication; 1.6 Confidentiality of Information; 1.5 Fees; 5.1 Responsibilities of Partners and Supervisory Attorneys; and 5.3 Responsibility of a Subordinate Lawyer as the technology resources are discussed.

Cancellation Policy: Cancellation/transfer requests will be honored until 5:00 p.m. the day preceding the seminar. You will, however, be charged $40 if you cancel or transfer your registration to a different seminar after the link to the materials has been e-mailed by Virginia CLE®.
Full refunds or transfers are available up to two days after a webcast in the unlikely event that you experience technical difficulties.
Inclement Weather Policy and Updates
MCLE Credit Caveat: The MCLE Board measures credits by the time you spend in attendance. If you enter a seminar late or leave it early, or both, you must reflect those adjustments accurately in the credits you report on your credit reporting form. A code will be given at the end of the seminar, which must be written on your MCLE form.
MCLE rules require seminars be taken in an environment conducive to learning.

Chris Fortier / Oakton
Chris Fortier is the author of The Lawyer’s Guide to Office Automation, published in February 2023. In his day job, he is an attorney-adviser with the Social Security Administration’s Office of Hearings Operations in Falls Church, Virginia (of course, the views he expresses do not reflect those of SSA or the federal government).
Mr. Fortier is a four-time ABA TECHSHOW presenter and a past member of its Planning Board, presenting on topics such as office automation, Microsoft Office, audio/video editing and presentation, and online forms, among other topics. He will present at the 2025 version of ABA TECHSHOW.
Mr. Fortier serves as co-chair for the Virginia State Bar TechShow and the VSB Annual Meeting and was the President of the Virginia State Bar Young Lawyers Conference (YLC). He expanded the YLC’s social media and web footprint. He also established a weekly video series dedicated to training new lawyers, and added automated features such as forms and directory lists to the YLC’s website. He also won the Edwin Burnett Young Lawyer of the Year Award in 2013 and is currently a fellow of the American Bar Foundation and the ABA Young Lawyers Division.
Mr. Fortier also served on the board for the Virginia State Bar’s Diversity Conference, where he (and a few dedicated individuals) established the Conference publication Invictus, along with its social media presence.
Mr. Fortier has served in various roles for the American Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division, including as a delegate representing Virginia to the YLD Assembly and as a director in the executive cabinet.
Mr. Fortier graduated from the Appalachian School of Law in Grundy, Virginia, where he served as its Alumni Association President (and started its social media presence). He is also a proud graduate of James Madison University. He is the husband of Brittany Fortier and father of Ansley Fortier and Breton Fortier.
