Regulating student conduct is one of a school’s most challenging operational tasks. Because strategies in these situations vary wildly depending on the type of school and its culture, professional expertise can be invaluable. The speakers, three lawyers experienced in school law, will share proven tactics for setting student policies, conducting investigations, enforcing discipline, and communicating with school administrations and school boards. Specifically, they will suggest how to handle off-campus disciplinary issues, challenging parents, allegations of sexual abuse, incidents where a student’s mental health crisis may have given rise to a disciplinary matter, and more.

Cancellation Policy: Cancellation/transfer requests will be honored until 5:00 p.m. the day preceding the seminar. You will, however, be charged $40 if you cancel or transfer your registration to a different seminar after the link to the materials has been e-mailed by Virginia CLE®.
Full refunds or transfers are available up to two days after a webcast in the unlikely event that you experience technical difficulties.

MCLE Credit Caveat: The MCLE Board measures credits by the time you spend in attendance. If you enter a seminar late or leave it early, or both, you must reflect those adjustments accurately in the credits you report on your credit reporting form. A code will be given at the end of the seminar, which must be written on your MCLE form.

Hal Johnson is chair of the education practice at Williams Mullen. He advises colleges and independent schools regarding board-level governance; Title IX investigations and compliance in the areas of sexual assault and athletics; FERPA and privacy issues; student conduct codes and disciplinary proceedings; Department of Education and/or Office of Civil Rights investigations. He also has served as an independent investigator for sensitive or complicated internal investigations. He has defended educational institutions in various types of litigation, including Title IX litigation, civil rights and due process claims for wrongful student dismissals, as well as personal injury and wrongful death cases.
