When the Virginia General Assembly significantly reshaped the state’s employment law landscape in 2020, one of the most impactful developments was the enactment of the Virginia Wage Payment Act (VWPA). These materials provide an overview of that Act, along with the related Virginia Overtime Wage Act (VOWA)—both introduced in 2020—and their subsequent amendments. The discussion will also examine how these substantive changes have affected both employers and employees, drawing on emerging case law as well as the presenters’ perspectives. Notably, this presentation incorporates viewpoints from both sides of the bar, offering insight from those who primarily represent employees and those who typically represent employers.
