Why Attend?
Get answers to these questions:
- Back to basics: what is a leading question? When can you do it?
- Planning cross-examination of the spouse or other parent: which topics are helpful to your case? Which topics are less persuasive to the judge?
- Calling the adverse parent or spouse as your witness: should you do it? Can you cross-examine them? Can their lawyer cross-examine them?
- Strong emotion on the stand: how should you adapt your style to handle witnesses who are tearful or angry?
- Special witnesses in family law cases: how should you cross-examine the child who takes the stand, the child’s therapist, and the grandparents?
- Knowing when to stop: did you make the points you wanted to make? Can these parties still coparent after they leave the courtroom?
Family law cases have high conflict and high emotion, creating plenty of opportunity for persuasive cross-examination. Without proper planning and skillful handling of different witnesses, however, it can be easy for your points to get lost and to lose control of the testimony. In this introductory seminar, we will cover the fundamentals of cross-examination in family law cases and help you develop the skills you need to cross-examine with confidence.
