The continuous growth and developments in the sports and entertainment industries have created increasing interplay with new industries, businesses, and interested parties, expanding complex legal needs for athletes, entertainers, and organizations. The program presenters will focus on Virginia law, providing practical advice and helpful tips when representing clients engaged in the sports and entertainment industries, including the new frontier of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals.

Attendees will obtain a basic understanding of sports and entertainment law in Virginia. Primarily geared to address the needs of the non-specialist attorney, this seminar will help attendees understand the general commercial, contractual, employment, intellectual property, trusts and estates, and administrative law concepts as applied to the sports and entertainment industries. Attendees will also learn to evaluate their clients’ needs and when to either seek help or make useful referrals to specialists.

Registration Deadlines:
Webcast: 10 minutes prior to seminar. If you register for a webcast the day of the seminar, your e-mail receipt will include a link to launch the seminar and download the materials.
Telephone: Online registration ends at 11:59 p.m. the day preceding the seminar
Call (800) 979-8253 to register up to one hour prior to the seminar
Live on Site: Online registration ends at 11:59 p.m. the day preceding the seminar
Walk-in registration is permitted on a space-available basis

Cancellation Policy: Cancellation/transfer requests will be honored until 5:00 p.m. the day preceding the seminar. You will, however, be charged $40 if you cancel or transfer your registration to a different seminar after the link to the materials has been e-mailed by Virginia CLE.

Full refunds or transfers are available up to two days after a webcast in the unlikely event that you experience technical difficulties.

MCLE Credit Caveat: The MCLE Board measures credits by the time you spend in attendance. If you enter a seminar late or leave it early, or both, you must reflect those adjustments accurately in the credits you report on your credit reporting form. A code will be given at the end of the seminar, which must be written on your MCLE form.

Christopher McLean is the Chair of the Sports and Entertainment Team at Kaufman & Canoles, PC, where he applies his extensive corporate and commercial law experience to advise clients when engaging in transactions in the sports and entertainment industries. His trusts and estates practice focuses on the specialized needs of athletes, entertainers, and other professionals and executives. He represents individuals in the negotiation of commercial/endorsement agreements, employment agreements, executive compensation arrangements, and business opportunities utilizing an inclusive approach to ensure the compensation structure and tax implications are thoughtfully incorporated into and complement the individual’s broader trust and estate plan while protecting and preserving the client’s interests.

William M. Palmer, Kaufman & Canoles, PC / Norfolk

William Palmer is an associate at Kaufman & Canoles, PC, and member of the firm’s Sports and Entertainment team and the Labor and Employment practice group. His practice focuses on employment litigation and counseling on a wide variety of employment matters. With a background in both sports and entertainment, he applies his litigation and advising experience to both industries. He has specifically been engaged in researching and tracking the latest developments in Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) legislation, compliance with NCAA regulations, and contract review and negotiations.
