Information

Why Attend?

  • Learn about new and looming ethics developments from Jack Marshall, a nationally acclaimed ethicist and a malpractice expert
  • Earn 3.0 hours of MCLE Ethics credit
  • BONUS: For no extra charge, after the seminar an assortment of box lunches will be provided to those attending in person at the Bobzien-Gaither Education Center on September 27!

Rudyard Kipling exhorted the noble, worthy, and brave to keep their heads “when all around you are losing theirs and blaming it on you.” Seldom has the ability of lawyers to meet Kipling’s challenge been more crucial.

Ethics, and especially professional ethics, are fraying at the edges and ripping at the seams. Society, its institutions, and its leaders are increasingly rejecting civility, proportion, independence, respect, and fairness in a frantic quest for ends without regard for means.

Legal ethicist, lawyer, and writer Jack Marshall will present this interactive course. This will be no passive effort to satisfy CLE requirements: the three hours of instruction are designed to sharpen the legal ethics instincts. It also aspires to leave attendees with renewed pride and purpose, as members of the one profession that keeps its metaphorical head, but also will serve as a role model to others at risk of losing theirs.

John Adams called upon lawyers to be the “aristocracy of a democracy” by virtue of their training and values. Lawyers must rise to the challenge. Legal ethics and professionalism must be our guides.

The course will …

  • Review and analyze the wildest legal ethics events of a crazy year;
  • Examine the tools, rules, and concepts that will keep Virginia lawyers from succumbing to ethics rot;
  • Focus on critical problems in the profession, such as the politicizing of representation, and the capitulation of law firms to the “cancel culture”;
  • Dissect mind-bending legal hypotheticals that crystallize important and elusive legal ethics mandates;
  • And more …
