This presentation provides foundational knowledge regarding service-connected disability compensation benefits provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The presentation explores notable “in-service events” and discusses potential claims which may arise due to those events. In addition, the presentation also covers basic concepts in veterans law, including reasonable doubt, VA’s duty to assist claimants, and the appeals system. Finally, we conclude by discussing requirements to represent veterans and how to incorporate veterans disability compensation into your practice.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER


Brandy Disbennett-Albrecht
, Greene & Marusak, LLC / Roanoke

Brandy is an experienced veteran’s law practitioner. She has worked in both public and private practice representing veterans before the US Department of Veterans Affairs, including over 6 years with the Benefits Service Line of the Virginia Department of Veterans Services (VDVS). Brandy is a Certified Professional in Management (AMA-CPM) and during her service with VDVS, held many leadership and management roles, including in policy, project management, quality control, and training. Brandy has a passion for instruction and has taught a Veterans Law Practicum at Washington & Lee University School of Law since 2019. She has delivered over 1500 hours of training in the field of veterans law, including continuing legal education presentations and other public speaking events. Brandy was also appointed to serve on the Virginia State Bar’s Standing Committee on Access to Legal Services in 2020. 

Brandy graduated cum laude from Roger Williams University School of Law and is admitted to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia. She is accredited to represent veterans before the US Department of Veterans Affairs and licensed to practice before the US Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims.
