Limited to 24 participants!
On January 1, 2022, Virginia became the last state to allow appeals of right to the Court of Appeals of Virginia in almost all cases. This dramatic shift means that many attorneys will find themselves with the ability to file a direct appeal from the trial court for the first time. This course is designed to give you hands-on training in appellate advocacy from some of the most experienced appellate attorneys in Virginia, judges from the Court of Appeals of Virginia and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and Justices from the Supreme Court of Virginia.
Besides receiving instruction on how to improve your oral arguments, legal writing, and research skills, each participant will draft a brief and participate in mock oral arguments with individualized feedback on both the written and oral arguments from the faculty of attorneys and judges. (You will need to submit a 15-20-page brief by Friday, July 29. You will receive the case information necessary to prepare your brief and first oral arguments on Friday, July 15.)
Participants will also hear from a panel of state and federal appellate judges and get a perspective from the bench on effective arguments from those who make the decisions.
This seminar is not eligible for discounts.
