This one-hour CLE will cover the key ethics rules related to trust accounting and handling money, including the different types of trust accounts, accepting credit cards, handling advanced fees, and handling disputes over entitlement to money in the lawyer’s accounts. Assistant Ethics Counsel for the VSB Emily Hedrick and VSB investigator Ron McCall, a licensed attorney and CPA, will provide an overview of the required books and records, and required accounting procedures applicable to all trust accounts.

Cancellation Policy: Cancellation/transfer requests will be honored until 5:00 p.m. the day preceding the seminar. You will, however, be charged $40 if you cancel or transfer your registration to a different seminar after the link to the materials has been e-mailed by Virginia CLE.

Full refunds or transfers are available up to two days after a webcast in the unlikely event that you experience technical difficulties.

MCLE Credit Caveat: The MCLE Board measures credits by the time you spend in attendance. If you enter a seminar late or leave it early, or both, you must reflect those adjustments accurately in the credits you report on your credit reporting form. A code will be given at the end of the seminar, which must be written on your MCLE form.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Emily Hedrick, Virginia State Bar / Richmond

Emily Hedrick is Assistant Ethics Counsel for the Virginia State Bar and has held this position since 2011. She currently serves as a staff liaison to the Standing Committee on Legal Ethics, the Special Committee on Technology and the Future Practice of Law, and the Practice Management Task Force, drafts advisory ethics opinions, and provides informal ethics advice to members of the bar through the ethics hotline.

Before joining the VSB, Emily was a law clerk fellow at the Supreme Court of Virginia Office of the Chief Staff Attorney. She has a BA in philosophy from the University of Virginia and a JD from the University of Virginia School of Law.

Ron McCall, Virginia State Bar / Richmond

Ron McCall is an Investigator for the Virginia State Bar. He is a member of the District of Columbia and Virginia Bars and is a Certified Public Accountant in Virginia. He has worked for the Virginia State Bar for 14 years and conducts investigations of complaints against attorneys and conducts reviews of attorney trust accounts. Before joining the Virginia State Bar, Ron was a Special Agent with the FBI and specialized in White Collar Crime investigations. He has a BA from the University of Maryland, and an MBA and JD from George Washington University.
