From the start of how an author gets to an editor or an agent and how a book is sold to the negotiation process and key terms of a book deal, this panel discussion is a primer for beginning lawyers and a refresher course for lawyers with more experience in the field. In addition, the panel discusses current issues and trends on the horizon for literary publishing such as the growth of digital publishing and self-publishing.

Kirk T. Schroder, Esq., Schroder Brooks Law Firm / Alexandria, Charlottesville, Richmond

Kirk T. Schroder is a nationally recognized entertainment lawyer based in Virginia. He has been recognized in "Best Lawyers in America" for the field of entertainment law and is the past chair of the American Bar Association's Entertainment and Sports Law section. He is also the Co-Editor of "The Essential Guide to Entertainment Law," one of the leading books on this subject. His legal work in the literary publishing field includes the representation of New York Times best-selling authors such as Margot Shetterly (Hidden Figures) and Beth Macy (Dopesick), along with many other prominent authors and first-time writers. Mr. Schroder’s entertainment law experience also includes work with film production studios, independent filmmakers and producers, show runners, writers, directors, and actors for film and television around the country. His law firm, Schroder Brooks Law Firm PLC, specializes in providing legal services for the creative community including clients involved in fashion, entertainment, intellectual property, and the visual arts.

Peter Steinberg, Literary Manager, Fletcher & Company / New York, NY

Peter Steinberg is a literary manager at Fletcher & Company in New York City. He joined Fletcher & Company in 2021 from Foundry Literary + Media. He has represented numerous New York Times bestsellers (including three #1 New York Times bestsellers), and clients have been nominated for or awarded Edgars, The Pulitzer Prize, The Story Prize, The Paris Review Discovery Prize, PEN/Faulkner and National Book Awards. Most recently, The Undocumented Americans, by Karla Cornejo Villavicencio, was a finalist for the 2020 National Book Award. His list includes narrative non-fiction, commercial and literary fiction, memoir, self-help, history, pop culture, humor, sports, and children’s books. Several of his authors have had their books made into major motion pictures, including Towelhead and I Love You Phillip Morris. Mr. Steinberg is a graduate of NYU film school and worked briefly in the film business prior to becoming a literary agent.
