A pre-recorded streaming AUDIO replay of the May 2021 webcast, Ethical Considerations in Outsourcing.

Course Outline

  • Understand the four ethical categories of outsourcing: supervision of non-lawyers, client communication, confidentiality, and billing and fees
  • Learn about significant amendments approved by the Virginia Supreme Court to LEO 1850, “Outsourcing of Legal Services,” first published in 2010, effective January 12, 2021

We all have the same 24 hours in a day, yet why do some lawyers seem to accomplish so much while others leave the office each day wondering “what just happened?”

As lawyers, the most significant value that you bring to your practice and to your clients is your ability to think and strategize. Your clients are paying you for your ability to help them solve legal problems. One option available to help you efficiently maximize your time is outsourcing portions of the cases, but you need to understand how to do it correctly and, more important, ethically.

Join us for this program to learn what may ethically be outsourced in an age in which a firm can get assistance with almost everything, from accounting, legal research, brief writing, ordering records, summarizing records, digesting depositions, remote administrative assistants and paralegals, remote receptionists, website texting services, expert searches, trial presentations, case reviews, and information technology management.

Topics to be covered include:

  • What outsourcing should be disclosed to clients?
  • What role does client consent play in the process?
  • What costs can be passed on to clients?
  • How does client consent for outsourcing differ from consent for conflicts of interest?
  • What is the effect of amendments effective January 2021 to LEO 1850, which governs ethical outsourcing?

Anthony Greene, MichieHamlett / Charlottesville

Tony Greene represents clients in various areas of personal injury law. After graduation from the University of Virginia with his bachelors in economics, he worked for the International Justice Mission as a Human Rights intern in the Philippines. It was then that he discovered his passion for helping others and improving their lives. While attending law school he worked as a legal intern at the United States attorney’s Office—Western District of Virginia, the Federal Trade Commission in Washington, DC, and the Louisa County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office in Louisa, Virginia. He received his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law and after passing the bar exam began working in Georgia.

Mr. Greene’s previous work saw him representing clients in mass tort litigation cases and class action lawsuits. Most notably, he worked on a 9-figure antitrust conspiracy case helping to manage reports as well as preparing witnesses for depositions and hearing testimonies. He also oversaw and managed federal condemnation proceedings for a natural gas pipeline company in which he drafted dispositive briefings, written discovery, and depositions.

Since moving back to Charlottesville, Mr. Greene enjoys cheering for all things UVA athletics and getting outdoors with his wife and two sons.
