Faculty

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

T. Kevin Wilson, The Wilson Law Firm / Manassas
T. Kevin Wilson earned his B.A. from the University of Kentucky, and his J.D., with honors, from the Syracuse University College of Law.  He settled in Virginia and has been representing people accused of DUI and criminal offenses for more than 25 years.  He is a Member of the National College for DUI Defense and a Founding Member of the DUI Defense Lawyers Association—both of which are national organizations dedicated to raising the quality of DUI/DWI defense by educating lawyers about the many complex issues that arise in DUI/DWI cases. He has completed the NHTSA curriculum on DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing several times, the first time being more than 16 years ago. This is the same course officers must complete.

Mr. Wilson went on to become an Instructor and he has taught Standardized Field Sobriety Testing to lawyers from coast to coast.  He has also completed the Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement curriculum. This course, known as ARIDE, is the next course officers complete and it builds on the basic Standardized Field Sobriety Testing course. The third step for officers is the Drug Recognition Expert, or DRE, program, which builds upon ARIDE.  Although Mr. Wilson is not allowed to complete the DRE program, because you have to be an officer to do so, he has completed several courses on the DRE program.

Mr. Wilson is trained as an Operator of five different breath-alcohol testing machines, and he has even purchased several breath testing machines of his own, including an Intoxilyzer 5000 and an Intoximeter ECIR.  In addition to his extensive study of breath alcohol testing, he has completed training on blood alcohol testing done both in a hospital setting and in a forensic lab setting.  Mr. Wilson has studied both gas and liquid chromatography in a working lab, and he holds certificates in Forensic Chromatography, Forensic Analysis of Solid Drugs and Forensic Principles of DUID.  He is one of only two lawyers in Virginia to have earned the designation of Forensic Lawyer-Scientist, as recognized by the American Chemical Society Division of Chemistry and the Law.  His extensive, specialized education, training, and experience in the field of DUI / DWI Defense have helped him win not-guilty verdicts in extremely difficult and seemingly unwinnable cases:  0.29 (blood); 0.24 (breath); and 43 ng (marijuana).

In addition to practicing law, co-authoring a book on surviving a DUI arrest, and teaching DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, Mr. Wilson teaches law.  As a police academy Legal Instructor, he has taught Virginia Criminal Law, Virginia Criminal Procedure, Virginia Rules of Evidence, and Constitutional Law. And as a contract attorney, he teaches Virginia firearms law, including topics such as prohibited possessors, prohibited places, open and concealed carry, brandishing, use of force, self-defense, defense of others, and defense of property.
