This course will provide a basic overview of residential and commercial landlord-tenant law with an emphasis on the VRLTA. Focus areas will include various notice requirements, actions commonly brought by tenants, and issues that frequently arise in collecting rent and damages. The material will also take a basic look at bankruptcy law as it affects landlord-tenant proceedings. Finally, some of the recent changes in the VRLTA will be discussed, as will practice considerations for those interested in this area of the law.

Webcast: 10 minutes prior to seminar. If you register for a webcast the day of the seminar, your e-mail receipt will include a link to launch the seminar and download the materials.
Telephone: Online registration ends at 11:59 p.m. the day preceding the seminar
Call (800) 979-8253 to register up to one hour prior to the seminar

Cancellation Policy: Cancellation/transfer requests will be honored until 5:00 p.m. the day preceding the seminar. You will, however, be charged $40 if you cancel or transfer your registration to a different seminar after the link to the materials has been e-mailed by Virginia CLE.

Full refunds or transfers are available up to two days after a webcast in the unlikely event that you experience technical difficulties.

MCLE Credit Caveat: The MCLE Board measures credits by the time you spend in attendance. If you enter a seminar late or leave it early, or both, you must reflect those adjustments accurately in the credits you report on your credit reporting form. A code will be given at the end of the seminar, which must be written on your MCLE form.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Cassandra E. Sheehan, Pesner Altmiller Melnick & DeMers PLC / Tysons

Cassandra Sheehan is an associate in the firm. Her practice is focused on various types of domestic relations cases as well as general civil litigation. She works on domestic relations matters, custody and visitation disputes, the prosecution and defense of protective orders, equitable distribution of assets, child and spousal support, contested and uncontested divorces, as well as negotiating and drafting marital settlement agreements and pre-nuptial agreements. She also handles adoptions, guardianships, name changes, and post-divorce enforcement matters.

Ms. Sheehan is well-versed in litigation and zealously represents her clients in court when necessary, but also works with them to resolve matters through negotiation, settlement conferences, and mediation. In addition, she works on a number of non-domestic civil litigation issues, including, but not limited to, commercial and residential landlord-tenant matters, issues faced by homeowners associations and condominium associations, property disputes, estate litigation, collections matters, and various types of lawsuits involving businesses and individuals, including but not limited to fraud, breach of contract, and defamation matters. She additionally assists with transactional work such as foreclosures and the drafting of contracts and business and corporate-related documents. Experience in various types of law allows her to bring a multi-faceted approach to resolving her clients’ legal problems.

Heather R.  Steele, Pesner Altmiller Melnick & DeMers PLC / Tysons

Heather Steele is a partner in the firm. She handles many types of civil matters, including landlord-tenant cases, homeowners association (HOA) and condominium associations (condos), business law, civil lawsuits, contracts, and preparation of limited liability company (LLC) and other corporate documents.

Ms. Steele regularly teaches seminars on landlord-tenant law, community association law, and important legal concepts for small businesses. She deals with legal issues for businesses and individuals, including contract review, contract drafting, creating and incorporating corporations and limited liability companies, as well as preparing demand letters and handling business litigation. Ms. Steele represents commercial and residential landlords in eviction and past-due rent lawsuits. Associate attorney Cassandra Sheehan works with Ms. Steele on debt collection for businesses, landlords, and community associations.

Ms. Steele drafts leases, lease amendments, lease default notices, lease extensions, and lease terminations. She advises clients in estate litigation matters, including will contests, estates without a will, and lawsuits against executors or personal representatives.

Ms. Steele is peer-rated by Martindale Hubbell as AV-Preeminent. The Martindale Hubbell Peer Review is a rating given by a lawyer’s peers, and an AV-Preeminent rating is a significant rating accomplishment—a testament to the fact that a lawyer’s peers rank her at the highest level of professional excellence.
