A Primer on LGBTQ Issues and Update on Emerging Questions, Including Recent Virginia Legislation and Decisions by the United States Supreme Court

Legal issues relating to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community have been changing rapidly, particularly over the last few decades. As LGBTQ people have felt more comfortable coming out, issues relating to the LGBTQ community are more likely to surface in your practice. Whether you practice employment law, government contracts, education law, family law, or housing law, or if you simply want to make sure that your office is using best practices to interact respectfully and effectively with members of the LGBTQ community, this seminar is for you. Further, the Virginia General Assembly recently took action on several pieces of LGBTQ-related pieces of legislation, and the seminar will include a run-down of what that legislation is and how it will impact law in the Commonwealth. We will discuss recent decisions by the United States Supreme Court, administrative action taken by the Trump Administration, and the implications in particular relating to Title VII and Title IX.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Cathryn M. Oakley, Human Rights Campaign / Washington, DC

Cathryn Oakley is the state legislative director and senior counsel at the Human Rights Campaign, where she is responsible for advising legislators and advocates working to enact laws that further LGBTQ equality. She focuses in particular on passing non-discrimination laws at the state and local levels and combating anti-LGBTQ legislation in state legislatures, including bills preventing municipalities from passing non-discrimination ordinances, bills that would give state agents the ability to deny service from LGBTQ people, and anti-transgender legislation that limits the ability of transgender people—including students—to access facilities in accordance with their gender identity.

Ms. Oakley earned her law degree from the George Mason University School of Law and is a member of the Virginia Bar. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Smith College, where she was a Research Fellow at the Louise W. and Edmund J. Kahn Liberal Arts Institute. Prior to working at the Human Rights Campaign, she practiced family law at the Myerson Law Group in Northern Virginia.
