Topics Covered

  • Hear examples of cybersecurity threats (both general and those specifically experienced by real estate practitioners)
  • Learn practical information to help prevent cybersecurity threats, and to respond when a threat appears
  • Get an overview of recent changes to the Rules of Professional Conduct

In today’s world, information security is of paramount importance. Lawyers, especially those practicing in the real estate field, occupy a unique and vulnerable position due to the confidential client information they typically hold. The Virginia Supreme Court recognized this concern when they amended Rules 1.1 (Competence) and 1.6 (Confidentiality of Information) to address cybersecurity and information technology.

With the ever-changing technology landscape, however, it’s difficult to understand what to be watchful for and how to safeguard your clients’ information. This presentation will provide an overview of those changes to the Rules of Professional Conduct, the various cybersecurity threats facing the real estate practitioner, and what steps you can take to protect yourself and your clients’ information from exposure. After all, it’s not a question of if you will be hacked, it’s only a matter of when.
