IRAs, 401(k) plans, and other “broad-based” savings plans are subject to the minimum requirement distribution rules, which are intended to force amounts out of tax-deferred trusts so they can be used for retirement (not just estate planning). The rules are complex and the penalties for missing RMDs are significant, but there are various planning strategies that advisors can raise with clients nearing retirement.
