When legal instruments require complex formatting, most Word users struggle to get the document to look the way they want. Users often describe it as a "wrestling match" or having to "outsmart the program." Some advanced features like automatic paragraph numbering, tables of contents, and tables of authority seem inaccessible or broken. I can't tell you how many times someone has told me, "Word makes me so frustrated!"

The good news is that once you understand how Word works, it is completely controllable. If you can think of something you wish Word could do when it comes to generating complicated or lengthy documents, it can. Further, all of the "how do I fix this mess?" issues can be avoided before they occur. The main problem with Word is that using it doesn't teach you how to control it. Practice makes perfect in everything except using Word because most of what you need to know is concealed.

Imagine if you spent all of your time creating content and none of it trying to beat the text into submission so it looks the way you want! What Version of Word Will Be Taught: The class will be taught in Word for Windows 2016. However, the manual you will receive as part of the class materials covers Word 2007, 2010, 2013, and 2016. Word for Mac 2011 and Word for Mac 2016 manuals are also available for download.

Barron K. Henley, Esq., is one of the founding partners of Affinity Consulting Group, a legal technology consulting firm focused on automating and streamlining law firms and legal departments.  He earned his B.S./B.A. (marketing and economics) and J.D. from The Ohio State University and is a member of the American, Ohio, and Columbus Bar Associations, and the Worthington Estate Planning Council.  He is a member of both the ABA Law Practice Management and the Real Property Trust and Estate Law ("RPTE") Sections. He's a member of RPTE Futures Task Force, a Board Member for the ABA TECHSHOW, and is the former Chair of the Ohio State Bar Association Law Office Automation & Technology Committee.  Mr. Henley heads Affinity’s document assembly/automation and software training departments; he is a renowned expert on Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, and HotDocs document assembly software; and has authored legal-specific manuals on HotDocs, Adobe Acrobat, and Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.  He is also an expert in launching new law firms, overhauling existing firms, and documenting and re-engineering law firm processes.  Finally, Mr. Henley teaches continuing legal education (CLE) classes throughout the U.S. and Canada covering a wide variety of topics related to law practice management, technology, and ethics.

When registering, please be sure to provide a legible, valid e-mail address to which Virginia CLE® can send a link to the e-book materials.

Registrants who elect a registration option that includes downloadable e-book seminar materials only and not the printed materials will receive, at the seminar, a short, printed seminar outline with space to take notes.

Printed Materials: You still have the option of receiving a complete set of printed materials for a higher registration fee. Registrants who choose this option will receive printed materials at the program.


To receive access to the downloadable e-book materials BEFORE the seminar AND register for the lower fee, your registration must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. THREE BUSINESS DAYS BEFORE the seminar.  A link to the downloadable e-book materials will be e-mailed to you two business days before the seminar.  Once you download the materials, you can review them and print the portions you want to bring with you to the seminar.

After 5:00 p.m. THREE BUSINESS DAYS BEFORE the seminar, only the registration options that include printed materials will be available.

Cancellation/transfer requests will be honored through 5:00 p.m. of the DAY BEFORE the seminar.  You will, however, be charged $90 for the materials if you cancel your registration for the seminar, or transfer registration to a different seminar, after the link to the materials has been e-mailed by Virginia CLE®.
