Part 1: Writing to Win

No matter what level of experience you have or what area of practice you work in, as a lawyer you are constantly faced with the challenge of writing clear and concise documents. Understanding the law is one thing, but knowing how to communicate it in a meaningful way is another. Being unclear in communication can cause costly errors and disastrous effects in the cases you handle. Do you know what your written communications are really saying to your clients and peers? Gain the tools you need to write successfully in today’s legal environment! You can expect to find out:

  • How to write and edit more efficiently

Part 2: Speaking to Win

Whether you are called upon to give an oral argument, legislative testimony, a presentation to clients, or comments to the press, you'll come to understand what makes a great speaker effective, and discover how to use those techniques yourself. This multi-media, multi-disciplinary program includes fun, practical, improvisational exercises—to be done in class and then at home—designed to improve your skills and conquer anxiety. Whether you're a trial lawyer or simply have to give the occasional presentation, you'll come away with concrete ideas you can implement immediately. You can expect to find out:

Steven D. Stark
, a writer, teacher, lawyer, and consultant, is the author of four books, one e-book, and one poetry chapbook. He has been a commentator for CNN, National Public Radio, and the Voice of America, where his role was to try to interpret American culture to the rest of the world. A former columnist for the Boston Globe and Montreal Gazette (where he wrote about the culture of world sports), he has written extensively on American culture and politics in such publications as the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, and the Atlantic Monthly. A former Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School, he has a vast background in the fields of legal writing, communication, and inter-cultural studies and has taught writing and speaking to thousands of lawyers, judges, business people, and government officials. He is a graduate of Harvard College and Yale Law School and devotes a substantial amount of his work to public interest, human rights, and pro bono organizations all over the world.
