Topics Covered

Special education law is a complicated legal discipline, impacting the rights of students and families, and increasing the responsibilities of public school divisions.

  • Learn the basic procedural stages
  • Learn strategies for negotiating issues
  • Review landmark cases and decisions
  • Receive wonderful written resources, including an electronic copy of the 164-page Pathways Through Special Education in Virginia manual with relevant laws, regulations, forms, and practice tips, produced by the disAbility Law Center of Virginia.

Cosponsored with the disAbility Law Center of Virginia

The seminar will focus on the essentials of special education law as penned in the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act ("IDEA"), the federal and Virginia implementing regulations, and interpretive case law. It is designed to provide an overview for those who may have a passing familiarity with civil and disability rights law, but who seek a more thorough understanding of those rights in the public education setting.

Topics to be covered include:

  • How children with disabilities in need of special education services are identified
  • Eligibility requirements a child must meet to receive special education services
  • Individualized Education Program (IEP)—what it is and how it is created
  • Special education protections for discipline of students with disabilities
  • Dispute resolution—options when the parents and school disagree
  • Landmark case review

Each attendee will receive an electronic copy of the disAbility Law Center of Virginia’s 164-page Pathways Through Special Education in Virginia manual with relevant laws, regulations, forms, and practice tips.
