Why Attend?

Competence in this area requires you to understand the elements and pitfalls of producing and developing reality TV.

  • Know the timeline for the development and production of reality TV and the various roles a lawyer can play in the process
  • Advise your clients on how to negotiate solid contracts and protect their intellectual property
  • Discover how different networks operate in reality TV, and the different types of contracts that might appear
  • Learn how to incorporate unexpected challenges into your practice for clients involved in the development and production of reality TV
  • See real redacted contracts from the development of reality TV

Unscripted or “reality” television and competition-based programming are on the rise in the television industry and as a cultural phenomenon. This course will address the basic legal and business issues when representing producers, creators, and talent in reality TV productions; how competition-based programming like The Voice, American Idol, and others function both legally and practically; and what you, as the responsible attorney, need to know before your client becomes a contestant.

The seminar will identify and examine common and not-so-common legal snags when developing and producing reality TV. Attendees should leave the program armed with a general framework for how to approach reality TV deals, and a general knowledge of some of the pitfalls that many lawyers in the area experience. The program will appeal to both newcomers and veterans in this area.
