In an ever-changing technological world, lawyers are faced with new ethical challenges in the communication and storage of client information by way of laptops, smartphones, and the “cloud.” The ABA adopted “technology amendments” to the Model Rules of Professional Conduct in 2012 to address the implications for compliance with the core duties of competence, communication, and confidentiality in client matters. This session will explore ABA Formal Opinion 477, issued on May 11, 2017, which informs counsel on special security precautions required to meet these ethical obligations.
