ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Carla D. Brown, Charlson Bredehoft Cohen & Brown, P.C. / Reston

Carla Brown has litigated cases in state and federal courts throughout Virginia, as well as in the District of Columbia and Maryland. She handles contractual matters, including the negotiation and review of severance agreements, covenants not to compete, and employment agreements. Ms. Brown also counsels employees who are subjected to workplace harassment, discrimination, and retaliation.

In 2014, the Metropolitan Washington Employment Lawyers Association recognized Ms. Brown as “Lawyer of the Year—In recognition of outstanding dedication to Civil Rights, Equality, and Justice.” She has been recognized as a rising star in Virginia Super Lawyers magazine in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012, a Super Lawyer in 2013, 2014, and 2015 (and, in 2015, was named as one of the Top 50 Women in Virginia). She was recognized as a Washington, D.C., Rising Star in 2013 and a Super Lawyer in 2014 and 2015. In 2013, Ms. Brown was invited to membership in The National Trial Lawyers Organization, Top 100 Trial Lawyers in the area of Civil Plaintiff Law and Top 40 Under 40.

Ms. Brown is a Council Member for Planning Committee of The Virginia Bar Association’s Labor Relations and Employment Law Section; and a member of the D.C. Bar Steering Committee, Labor and Employment Section. She is an Executive Board Member of the National Employment Lawyers Association. Ms. Brown is also a member of the Metropolitan Washington Employment Lawyers Association, the Fairfax Bar Association, the Northern Virginia Black Attorneys Association, and the Federal Bar Association. She is a former Barrister of the George Mason American Inn of Court.

Thomas P. Murphy, Hunton & Williams LLP / McLean

Tom Murphy is currently the head of the McLean Labor and Employment Law Team, and has tried over 65 jury trials over the last 37 years as a federal prosecutor and in private practice. In addition to having a nationwide litigation practice, he routinely advises clients on the labor and employment law aspects of doing business in other countries, a subject on which he frequently speaks and writes.

Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Murphy was an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia from 1982 to 1986, where he served in the Chronic Offender Unit. He was the recipient of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Special Achievement Award in 1986 for his successful prosecution of a number of cases of notoriety.

For four years, Mr. Murphy served as a Lieutenant in the U.S Navy, from 1978 to 1982.
