This segment will focus on how GALs can advocate for children by steering the parties toward the middle ground in hotly contested cases. When mom, dad, grandparents (and sometimes DHS and other individuals) have rigid ideas about what is best for the children and none of them seem compatible, the GAL usually can find solutions somewhere in the middle. Convincing one parent that making his/her former spouse disappear is NOT what is best for the children usually is a good place to start. We also take a look at the role of the GAL in assisting non-traditional families, how GALs can work with mental health providers, and how GALs must avoid giving legal advice to the parents. A quick comment on staying safe and keeping your wits about you will be included.
